- Samsung Electronics would also support Docomo with O-RAN-compliant solutions
Samsung Electronics Co. has released a statement announcing their contract with Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo Inc to supply 5G network equipment.
The South Korean conglomerate further stated that apart from its 5G technology, Samsung Electronics would also support Docomo with Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) compliant solutions, in order to “bring enriched 5G services to users, advance digital transformation for businesses, and improve society at large.”
Entry into the 5G equipment market
With companies like Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia and ZTE dominating the RAN market, Samsung had been a comparatively small player in the 5G mobile network equipment industry. But since geopolitical issues seem to have thrown Huawei out of the game in the Western market, Samsung has been rather quick at grabbing the opportunity. Their $6.6 billion Verizon contract has also helped them make their presence felt.
“Our goal is to leverage Samsung’s technical leadership to bring the best network solutions to mobile operators around the world, so they can deliver the next generation of transformative 5G services and electrifying user experiences,” said Satoshi Iwao, Vice President and Head of Network Division at Samsung Electronics Japan.
