Microsoft and quantum computing company, Quantinuum, have achieved the most reliable qubit generation till now, which is a significant advancement in quantum computing. This development is part of the ongoing competition among tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and IBM.Â
Various nations are in a race to create quantum computers that can perform calculations much faster than traditional silicon-based computers. These quantum machines could potentially solve scientific problems that would take millions of years with current classical computers.
Microsoft plans to release this technology to its cloud computing customers soon. About 100 reliable qubits are said to be needed to surpass a conventional supercomputer. While Microsoft and Quantinuum did not provide a timeline for reaching this milestone, it was stated that this breakthrough could potentially shorten the timeline by at least two years or more.
Quantum computers use qubits as their fundamental unit, which are fast but prone to errors if the computer is disturbed. To address this issue, researchers often build more physical qubits than needed and use error-correction techniques to produce a smaller number of reliable qubits.Â
Microsoft applied its error-correction algorithm to Quantinuum’s physical qubits, resulting in approximately four reliable qubits from 30 physical ones. This achievement is believed to be the best ratio of reliable qubits from a quantum chip ever demonstrated.
Zandar said that they ran more than 14,000 individual experiments without a single error, which is 800 times better than anything on record.
