Rohde and Schwarz Introduces Assembly Unit In New Delhi

Rohde and Schwarz (R&S) India introduced a new facility at Mohan Cooperative Estate A31, New Delhi in a press meet on Monday. The facility is an expansion of their existing R&D facility and corporate office. 

The facility has a repairs and calibrations lab for communication and technology systems’ testing and measurement equipment, an assembling unit and a lab for system integration. It also includes a training for customers training centre for its own employees as well as customers for using technology as well as keeping up with technology.

It was announced at the meet that R&S India is also planning to introduce a facility in Bangalore at Manyata Business Park on April 22. This facility will focus on the test and measurement sector.

The company also showcased a security body scanner at the press meet, which uses millimetre waves to detect objects under a single layer of clothing in just 64ms, producing end result in under 3 sec. It can detect anything, irrespective of material, using computer vision. It can detect even explosives that can’t be otherwise detected. The scanner is already in use at Bangalore airport’s T2 terminal and has received around 1000 global orders, with an expected deployment of 300-400 scanners in India.

For full-scale deployment, the scanner requires approval from various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Rohde and Schwarz India is hopeful for its implementation in 5-6 months, as stated by Mohan Kakde, Senior Director of Sales and Operations for Technology Systems.

The company, already engaged in €4-5 million projects, is gearing up to participate in €20-30 million medium size defence projects. Aerospace and defence is their fastest growing sector in the Indian market, according to the company.

Commenting on their contribution to ‘Make in India’, Yatish Mohan, managing director, R&S India said, “We take a few parts from Germany and try to add as much as possible locally from our resources and 3rd party. We try to keep foreign content to less than 40%, the remaining 60% we use local.” 

In the next 10 years, R&S expects more than twice growth in India. The company even expressed intentions of manufacturing in India, when there is strong enough demand. “In Asia pacific India is our most interesting market,”  said Ralf Maximilian, vice president global sales & marketing Technology Systems Rohde and Schwarz.

With a workforce of 220 in R&D and 350 overall, the company crossed €100 million business in India, last calendar year.  The company has a fully owned MSME Rohde and Schwarz systems which provides customisation over standard Rohde and Schwarz products as well as third party products.

Rohde and Schwarz has four main business divisions- Test & Measurement, Aerospace Defence Security, Broadcast & Media and Cybersecurity & Networks. The R&D team is currently working on reduced capability (RedCap) and 6G technology. The company has recently acquired Zurich instruments to delve into quantum computing.
