With a budget of INR 515 crore, the scheme aims to light up 1 lakh households and 1500 multipurpose centres.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India has launched a Solar Power Scheme to benefit the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG), under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN). Scheduled to span from the financial years 2023-24 to 2025-26, the scheme aims to electrify approximately 1 lakh households in PVTG areas, covering 18 states and the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

A key component of this scheme is the deployment of off-grid solar systems to households where conventional grid electricity is not a viable option. This approach is crucial in ensuring that even the most remote and inaccessible areas can access electricity.

The scheme also envisages providing solar lighting to 1500 Multi-Purpose Centres (MPCs) located in PVTG areas that are devoid of grid electricity. These MPCs serve as essential community centres in tribal areas, offering various services and facilities.

The financial blueprint for this ambitious scheme is set at Rs. 515 Crore. This budget is meticulously allocated, with clear provisions for both the solar off-grid systems for households and the solar lighting in MPCs. Ensuring that these funds are appropriately distributed and used will be key to the scheme’s success.

Funding for the implementation of this scheme will be sourced from the DAPST (District Allocation for Particular State Territory) allocation of the MNRE. To streamline the financial process, a dedicated budget line ‘PM JANMAN’ has been established. The approved funding is clearly outlined for each of the three financial years (2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26), cumulatively amounting to INR 515 Crore.

The execution of the scheme will commence following the issuance of administrative approval and its implementation guidelines. This approval process falls within the delegated powers of the ministry and has been concurred by the IFD (Internal Finance Division), as indicated in their recent communication.
