Over 80% of the respondents in 20 cities thinks that the scenario of mobility has been improved in their respective cities in the past five years

Majority of Indians are willing to switch to environment-friendly electric vehicles (EV) from traditional modes of transport, according to a report by Ola’s Mobility Institute – a policy research and social innovation think tank.

“57% respondents are ready to replace their conventional fuel vehicles with an electric vehicle over the coming few years,” said the research report titled “Ease of Moving Index 2018.”

The report is based on the survey of 43,000 respondents conducted across 20 cities of India including Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Kochi, Hyderabad, Surat and Indore. The report assessed the cities on 55 different parameters.

According to the report, the future of mobility can be measured on several factors such as usage of electric vehicles, usage of smart cards, improvement in first and last mile connectivity, digital transactions, need for cycle tracks and footpaths, and the perception of owning a vehicle.

The report noted that 51% of people in Mumbai prefers public transport, Hyderabad comes on top in shared mobility and Ahmedabad provides the cleanest services in public commuting.

Mobility Improved

“Over 80% of the respondents in 20 cities thinks that the scenario of mobility has been improved in their respective cities in the past five years,” noted the report.

Ola Mobility Institute, established this year, is part of the cab aggregator and had launched the “Mission Electric” with the objective to put on road one million electric vehicles in the coming three years. The ride hailing platform had run a pilot project in Nagpur for testing its electric vehicles fleet.

However, electric vehicles in India have to go a long way as there are some challenges need to overcome such as high manufacturing costs and lack of infrastructure.
