According to a report by Asia Nikkei, India will start its pre-commercial trials of 5G internet technology in the first quarter of 2020. The report also said that the government is postponing the auction of 5G airwaves that was due before March, to the first quarter of the next fiscal year. This has been done to give enough time for mobile phone companies to work their stressed balance sheets.
Inter-ministerial panel for 5G trials
In the earlier part of this year, the government had set up an inter-ministerial panel to decide the criteria for the 5G trials. This panel also discussed whether Huawei should be allowed to participate. The decision on Huawei’s participation is pending with the prime minister’s office. As per the report, telecommunications department officials said that all are welcome to participate.
As per the report, Anshu Prakash, secretary of the telecom department told reporters that the inter-ministerial committee has given its report on Huawei. He added the government is considering the report. He also said that all who honour the country’s national security interest are welcome for 5G trials.
