The electric scooter, equipped with cutting-edge features and an LFP battery capable of covering 136km on a single charge, is aimed at attracting younger consumers aged 30 to 39.

Greaves Electric Mobility, based in Tamil Nadu, has launched the Nexus, a new all-electric scooter under its Ampere e-two-wheeler brand. The Nexus features a modern and stylish design, prioritizes functionality, and offers a certified range of 136 kilometres. It is aimed at the younger demographic, specifically those aged between 30 and 39 years.

The Nexus is available in two variants: the entry-level EX model priced at ₹109,900 and the higher-end ST model at ₹119,900, both prices being ex-showroom. The ST model includes a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster.

K Vijaya Kumar, who holds the positions of CEO and Executive Director at Greaves Electric Mobility, has expressed the company’s dedication to creating smart and environmentally friendly options for last-mile transportation. He also mentioned that Ampere has established itself as a prominent brand in India’s electric two-wheeler sector.

The Nexus is equipped with a spacious seat, an aluminium pillion grab handle, LED lighting, and a 7-inch TFT display with built-in navigation. The display operates on an automotive-grade OSEK system powered by the Renesas platform. The design inspiration for the Nexus comes from the ‘Arctic Tern’ bird, known for its aerodynamic, agile, and sturdy nature.

For ease of maintenance, the scooter features modular panels and air vents in the front and rear for drivetrain cooling. The Nexus also introduces a hybrid die-cast and fabricated tubular swingarm, creating a lightweight yet rigid chassis that enhances handling. The chassis incorporates high-strength 590MPa UTS steel, resulting in a swingarm that is up to four times stronger and houses the drivetrain.

The Nexus’s battery uses LFP chemistry and is certified for a 136km range. LFP batteries are noted for their thermal stability and longer service life, offering 30% more longevity than NMC batteries. The scooter can be fully charged in less than four hours. A 3kWh lithium-ion battery powers a 4kW mid-drive motor connected to the rear wheel via a belt-drive system.

Additionally, the Nexus features a two-stage gear reduction system that optimizes power and torque delivery to the wheel while ensuring quiet operation. The gear ratios are adjustable to cater to different speed requirements.

Greaves Electric Mobility has designed the Nexus as a versatile platform, paving the way for future product introductions. The company has filed for multiple patents, including five for the drivetrain swingarm and others for the functional louvres that assist in the drivetrain’s aero-thermal management.

The Nexus will be manufactured at the company’s Ranipet facility near Vellore, Tamil Nadu. This plant has a capacity of 500,000 units per year, with potential expansion to double that number. While specific sales targets for the Nexus were not disclosed, Greaves Electric Mobility plans to utilize Ampere’s extensive network of 400 sales outlets and over 350 service points nationwide to achieve high sales volumes. The company is also growing its service team, which exceeds 1,000 technicians.
