Gurin Energy Pte Ltd has recently shared its plans to make and operate a 500-MW/2-GWh battery in Japan. It is a step to enter the Asian country’s energy storage market.
This will be Japan’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS), providing four hours of discharge capacity.
The proposed investment is estimated at around JPY 91 billion (USD 633.4m/EUR 577.7m) and it is expected to be made in a six-year period.
Gurin Energy has also planned to set up a complex in 2026. It will be considered as several sites in Fukushima and Tochigi prefecture.
Toshiba Mitsubishi – Electric Industrial Systems Corporation (TMEIC) is set to deliver cutting-edge battery technology, with engineering consulting support from Nippon Koei Energy Solutions. This initiative will significantly boost Japan’s utility-scale lithium-ion energy storage capacity, surpassing its current capabilities.
This expansion will play a pivotal role in assisting grid operators in efficiently managing energy supply and demand. Japan, ranking as the world’s fifth-largest electricity consumer, has ambitious targets to increase renewable energy’s share in its energy portfolio to 36%-38% and augment its energy storage capacity by 10 GW by the decade’s end.
