Table 1 - OEM Wise EV Car Registration in India In August 2023
    • Tata Motors and MG Motor India continue to be the top-selling electric four-wheeler passenger vehicle brands in India
    • Hyundai is rising in the domain, and end-consumer sales of Citroen continue to fall MoM

In what appears to be a significant pointer towards the future of electric cars in India, the August 2023 registrations of passenger electric four-wheelers (PE4Ws) were a mixed bag of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

While Tata Motors continued to enjoy its leadership (at number one) in the PE4Ws domain, its registrations (for TATA PASSENGER ELECTRIC MOBILITY) fell approximately 14% Month on Month (MoM). In August 2023, the OEM registered 3750 electric vehicles, while in July 2023, it had registered 4340 units of the same. Please note that Tata Motors and Mercedes are registered under different names on the Vahan Portal, and this report has indicated all of them (Please see Table 1).

MG Motor India, being in rumoured news around it raising funds from some Indian conglomerates, continues its second-best-selling electric car OEM. However, it also saw 9% MoM decline. The company had registered 1220 units in July 2023. In August 2023, it registered 1106 units.

As per the Vahan data sourced today, there seems to be no change in the electric cars registered by Mahindra and Mahindra. The OEM registered 374 electric cars in July 2023, and 373 in August 2023.

PCA Automobiles (Citroen) registrations continued their decline MoM (15%), as only 88 of these were registered in August 2023. In July, the OEM had registered 104 electric cars. On the other hand, Hyundai seems to be on a roll, as it posted a 58% MoM growth in registrations. The company registered 180 electric cars in India in August 2023.

China-headquartered BYD also saw a decline of 19% MoM, as only 85% of BYD EVs were registered last month. In July, the OEM had registered 105 units.
