Features and USP: These high performance colour LEDs provide lighting manufacturers with discrete and multicoloured LED options to more cost effectively address a wider spectrum of applications such as architectural, vehicle and display lighting. These LEDs extend double lumens per dollar performance of the XB package to colour LEDs, delivering up to 40 per cent higher maximum light output than the XP-E colour LEDs. The combination of the high performance and small size of XB-D colour LEDs enable better colour mixing and lower system cost through the use of fewer LEDs. The company claims XLamp XM-L colour LEDs to be the brightest and smallest multicoloured LEDs of power class, delivering red, green, royal blue and white in one LED at twice the lumens per dollar of the MC-E colour LED. XM-L colour LED is 60 per cent smaller than MC-E LED, reducing the distance between the LED die, creating a small optical source for excellent optical control, efficient colour mixing and simplified design.

Osram’s Oslon compact LED

In October 2012, Osram Opto Semiconductors launched Oslon compact LED, which it claims is the smallest high power LED available in the automotive market.

Features and USP: The extremely small size of the new Oslon Compact, combined with its high light output, enables a single LED to be used as the default light source for all automotive forward lighting applications. The light points in the headlight can be placed in any arrangement, and customised designs can be developed to give different vehicles a unique appearance. Oslon Compact uses ThinGaN UX:3 chip technology, which involves the transfer to a silicon carrier and the removal of the original silicon substrate to provide high luminous efficacy even at high currents. The prototype measures only 1.5 x 1.9 mm² and produces 200 lumens from 700 mA. The clear white light from the chips is achieved through OSRAM’s C2 technology which converts blue light with the aid of ceramic conversion.

 Everlight’s COB Ju LED series

In May 2012, Everlight Electronics launched COB Ju LED series, a light source for directional and decorative applications with low thermal resistance and high performance.

Features and USP: The COB series is a 3-7 W multi-chip, ceramic substrate based LED that boasts a low thermal resistance (Rth <1.8°C/W) and superior efficacy of 100lm/W at 3000 K CCT and high CRI (>80Ra). It is available in all energy star/ANSI colour temperature ranges. Mechanically, the COB Ju series can be mounted directly on the lamp heat sink eliminating the SMT processes required for traditional discrete components on an MCPCB. This provides more direct thermal dissipation, ease of assembly, and lowering of the system cost in lighting applications. This series uses standard DC chips configured in series and parallel to provide the most convenient driving conditions for existing driver designs (9 V and 90 V).
