This year Agilent Technologies launched two signal generators.

In September 2012, Agilent launched the vector signal generator (VSG) in a PXI form factor. It combines fast switching and excellent RF parametric performance. It is designed for applications such as testing and validating the design of wireless power amplifiers and transceivers, public safety and military radios, and cellular base stations.

Features and USP: Agilent Technologies’ M9381A is a 1 MHz to 3 or 6 GHz vector signal generator in a PXI form factor. Agilent’s exclusive baseband tuning technology innovation enables VSG to run at a frequency and amplitude switching speed which is as fast as 10 µs in list mode and 250 µs from its programming interface. The new PXIe VSG does more tests in less time, which reduces the cost of testing. With its excellent modulation quality at high output power, the M9381A can be used at power levels of up to +10 dBm. It offers linearity and superior level accuracy, outstanding adjacent channel power ratio performance and wide modulation bandwidth (up to 160 MHz) for testing RF devices.

X-series signal generators

In May 2012, Agilent also launched the X-Series of 6 GHz signal generators that offer pure and precise signals to test the true performance of electronic devices.

Features and USP: The X-Series signal generators provide unmatched performance in phase noise, output power, adjacent channel power ratio performance (ACPR), EVM and bandwidth. With these capabilities, this series (available in analogue and vector models) supports the development of components and receivers that meet the complex challenges of mitigating interference, speeding up data throughput and increasing signal quality in applications such as radar, military communications and consumer wireless devices. Also, to provide pure and precise signals, it uses an innovative triple loop synthesiser to deliver phase noise performance of -146 dBc/Hz at 1 GHz and 20 kHz offset.

VTI Instruments’ waveform source—EMX-1434

In September 2012, VTI launched the EMX-1434 smart arbitrary waveform source.

Features and USP: The EMX-1434 incorporates best in class analogue design methodology to deliver industry-leading accurate waveform signals. This instrument is ideal for applications requiring standard function generator capability, or the need to generate custom-defined waveforms. Its 192 k samples/second/channel data rates extend the operational capabilities of function generators to new levels by ensuring sampling and bandwidth performance that is capable of accurately producing all critical waveforms.

It provides various sine waveform and noise waveform capabilities in four independent channels with their own frequency, phase and amplitude. Sine waveforms can be generated in continuous and burst modes with frequencies from 10 kHz to 200 kHz. The two channels of 64-bit tachometer inputs allow tight integration of tachometer information from rotating machinery with digitised data from the DSA card. Also, its data accuracy can be increased because the measurement data can be re-sampled and synchronised based on the edge of the tachometer.
