Vitesco Tech Delivers Electric Drive For Honda CR-V PHEV

0

This is the first integration of a Vitesco Technologies drive system into a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).

Vitesco Technologies will provide its EMR3 integrated axle drive to Honda for the new CR-V e, which will be launched in the U.S. and Japan later this year. This marks the first integration of a Vitesco drive system into a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). Honda will also use Vitesco’s fuel cell stack bypass valve to manage airflow, benefiting from Vitesco’s extensive experience in combustion engine airflow management.

Though the CR-Ve’s production numbers may be lower than other CR-V models, it is highly innovative, offering a long-range, quick refuelling and the ability to drive up to 60 kilometres of electric power from a 17.7 kWh high-voltage battery. The vehicle also features a 110V outlet to power devices up to 1,500W, making it useful during power outages and for outdoor activities.

Thomas Stierle, a member of Vitesco Technologies’ Executive Board, expressed pride in delivering the EMR3 axle drive system, highlighting its seamless integration into Honda’s carbon neutrality efforts. The EMR3 integrates an electric motor, power electronics, and a reducer into one compact, efficient unit. For the CR-Ve, Vitesco will supply the motor and electronics without the reducer. By March 2024, over 900,000 EMR3 units will have been delivered globally.

Developed by experts in Europe, China, and Japan, the EMR3 for the CR-V e produces 174 horsepower and 229 lb.-ft. of peak torque. The vehicle boasts a range of over 600 kilometres with a full hydrogen tank, plus an additional 60 kilometres of electric power. Manufacturing of the EMR3 has started at Vitesco’s Tianjin site in China.

Gunter Muehlberg, Head of Product Management High Voltage Drives at Vitesco Technologies, emphasized the suitability of hydrogen fuel cell systems for long-distance, sustainable mobility and confirmed the reliability of Vitesco’s axle drive technology in this application.
