Adopting Ukraine’s Electric Bikes in Combat: A Game-Changer in Modern Warfare Tactics?

The British Armed Forces, inspired by Ukraine’s innovative warfare techniques, are contemplating a shift in combat dynamics. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and Chief Admiral Sir Tony Radakin recently highlighted the potential of rocket-equipped electric bikes. As the world watched Ukraine’s impressive use of these high-speed e-bikes against Russian tanks, the UK’s top military brass aims to redefine warfare mobility and efficiency, leveraging these two-wheeled wonders.

These bikes, manufactured locally in Ukraine, achieved feats considered unthinkable for a two-wheeler. Not only do they possess a range extending over 200 miles, but their throttle mechanism allows speeds up to 50 mph. They can handle tough terrains, thanks to their robust suspension system.

The true combat potential of these bikes was unleashed when they were modified to carry the NLAW rockets, a formidable single-operator weapon capable of annihilating enemy tanks. While these rockets are designed for infantry, mounting them on an e-bike significantly extends their deployment range.

Electric bikes and e-motorcycles are not new in the military lexicon. The US tested electric mopeds by Huck Cycles, New Zealand trialed UBCO’s electric utility bikes, and Norway explored fat-tire electric bikes for their border patrols. Australian forces have also been experimenting with stealth electric bikes, leading to the advent of helicopter-mounted electric motorcycles in 2021. Europe and the Middle East’s elite forces have recognized the potential of electric bikes, marking a paradigm shift in warfare dynamics.

Adopting the electric bike strategy signifies a confluence of innovation, speed, and combat prowess. It’s more than mobility; it’s about redefining the modern battlefield,” stated a military expert. With the UK’s interest piqued it remains to be seen how these e-bikes will reshape the future of military combat.
