The Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY), Government of India had in a notification announced that with effect from 3rd April’13, certain electronics and IT product categories would need to mandatorily register with BIS for ensuring safety standards.

The products falling under the mandated category are electronic games (video), laptops/ notebooks/tablets, plasma/LCD/LED televisions, optical disc players with built in amplifiers, microwave ovens, visual display units, video monitors, printers, plotters, scanners, wireless keyboards, telephone answering machines, amplifiers , electronic musical systems, electronic clocks with mains power, set top boxes, automatic data processing machines like servers, blades and desktop computers.

The regulation is seen as a step by the Government of India towards bridging the gap between people, technology and safety while ensuring safer products to Indian consumers. It is estimated that around 50,00 to 70,00 products will get impacted by the new regulation, which calls for mandatory testing of these products in the BIS recognised laboratories as per the applicable Indian standards followed by registration with BIS.

Currently there are 5 laboratories which are recognised by BIS for the regulatory compliance testing, TUV Rheinland (India) being the latest addition and the only international certification body with full scope of recognition.

Kalyan Varma, country head – Product Testing and Certification, TUV Rheinland India, said: “We have taken proactive measures to support this initiative by the government and geared up to support the stakeholders by the means of ramping up infrastructure, manpower and operating in multiple shifts to meet the deadline. Also, being a global leader in testing, inspection and certification services, we are assisting our customers across the world for compliance to this new regulation through our market access team present in 500 locations across 65 countries.”
