A 77kWh battery pack featuring StoreDot’s ultra-fast charging high-energy (300Wh/kg) silicon-dominant cells was successfully charged from 10% to 80% in less than 10 minutes in a fully operational prototype of the Polestar 5.

StoreDot, a leader in extreme fast charging (XFC) battery technology for electric vehicles, and Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car brand, have unveiled groundbreaking battery technology that can charge an electric vehicle in just 10 minutes. This demonstration, a first of its kind, featured a 10-minute charge using silicon-dominant battery cells in an EV, achieving unprecedented charging speeds aimed at reducing consumer charging anxiety, which is a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of EVs.

In the demonstration, the companies effectively charged a 77kWh battery pack equipped with StoreDot’s extreme fast charging high-energy (300Wh/kg) silicon-dominant battery cells in a fully operational Polestar 5 prototype, achieving a charge from 10% to 80% in under 10 minutes.

The test maintained a consistent charge rate of over 310kW throughout and peaked at more than 370kW. All cell parameters, including temperature, voltage, and charged capacity, were monitored, ensuring the battery pack remained within the target operating temperature set by both teams’ engineers.

The demonstration not only highlighted StoreDot’s compatibility with existing car models but also demonstrated the feasibility of using standard charging infrastructure for extreme fast charging, instead of relying on proprietary chargers.

StoreDot has emphasized that its silicon-based anode technology continues to push the boundaries of energy density and charging rates, unlike traditional graphite anodes which are nearing their performance limits. This silicon design is critical for ongoing innovations in areas like extreme fast charging.

This achievement, powered by StoreDot’s advanced XFC battery cells, marks a significant step towards commercialization, validating the technology’s maturity, stability, and durability. It also sets the stage for widespread adoption of XFC batteries across the industry.

Dr. Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, expressed excitement about this significant milestone, highlighting the partnership with Polestar and the role of XFC in facilitating broader EV adoption by enabling 200 miles (320km) of charge in less than 10 minutes. This breakthrough aims to transform the EV ownership experience by eliminating the concerns over range and charging anxiety, allowing for long-distance travel comparable to that of traditional petrol-powered vehicles.

Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, noted that this technology eliminates long charging times, reshaping consumer expectations and fostering faster EV adoption by making electric mobility seamless for the broader market.

StoreDot is progressing towards making its XFC cells, which can charge 100 miles in 5 minutes this year, even more efficient, targeting 100 miles charged in 4 minutes by 2026 and in 3 minutes by 2028.

Among StoreDot’s strategic investors and partners are notable companies like BP, Daimler, VinFast, Volvo Cars, Polestar, Ola Electric, Samsung, TDK, and manufacturing partner EVE Energy.
