Scooters India Ltd (SIL) is planning to enter the electric vehicles (EV) market of the country. It has announced that it is in discussion with organisations such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC).

The company is looking at collaborating with EVI Technologies, Murata Technologies, Japan Sun Mobility and Xngri, USA for technology and logistics, apart from BHEL and NTPC.

Comeback of Lambretta

Scooter India is also looking at bringing back the Lambretta model in the electric version. Lambretta was once quite popular in the country but due to constant slip in sales, its production stopped in the 1980s. In India, the scooter was assembled by the Automobile Products of India (API). As electric two-wheelers are gaining popularity, SIL is planning to revamp the Lambretta model into an electric one.

SIL’s EV

SIL has a three-wheeler EV called Vikram EV that works on 12 batteries and accommodates seven passengers at once. It has also received the approval from the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), a leading automotive testing, certification and Research and Design service provider under the aegis of the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP). The vehicle will soon be commercially launched.

The company, in its regulatory filing, said that the Vikram EV would be developed in the passenger as well as goods carrier segments. While the passenger variant would have a four-seater capacity, including the driver, the goods carrier would be in the sub-one ton category.

Incorporated in 1972, Scooters India Limited is engaged in designing, developing, manufacturing and marketing of conventional and non-conventional fuel driven three-wheelers. The company has its own marketing network of regional sales offices all over India.
