With an aim to speed up the adoption of electric mobility in the country, the Automotive Research Foundation of India (ARAI) is looking to standardize the charging infrastructure of electric vehicles by the end of 2022.
This was revealed by Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister for Heavy Industries, in a meeting in Goa where the Centre and state governments interacted together to discuss the future of electric mobility in India.
“For fast charging, the prototype is ready and by December 2022, we will bring this to the market. But we are hoping this can be done even before that.”
He invited the industry stakeholders and policymakers from the key states to push electric vehicle adoption in the fast lane.
Pandey also underscored the need for the adoption of electric mobility in order to cut the greenhouse gas emission by one billion tonnes in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment at the COP26 at Glasgow.
The ministry looks at providing charging stations at 20 km for cars and at every 100 km for commercial vehicles while the cities will have a charging station at every 3 km.

“Even though the efforts are on to provide charging infrastructures across the country, initially the focus will be on expressways, highways and metros which are highly polluting.” Pandey added.
Arun Goel, Secretary, ministry of heavy industries, projects that 16 percent of the new two-wheelers, 20 percent of the new three-wheelers and 5 percent of the new cars sold will be electric by 2026.
He also projected almost 30 percent growth in the passenger travel km by 2030 and it will be driven population growth in the city and urban areas.
