The company aims to focus on next-gen green-tech and e-mobility products

Indium Corporation, a US-based global materials supplier to the electronics assembly and semiconductor packaging industries, recently organized a special ceremony to open its new 37,500-square-foot manufacturing facility in Penang, Malaysia. It has been learnt that the new facility will focus on manufacturing solder pastes, Thermal Interface Materials (TIMs) and solder preforms. It said that the new facility has begun its manufacturing activities and will continue to expand the production capacity to better serve the company’s customers in Malaysia and the surrounding region, including Thailand and Vietnam.

It is noteworthy that community and industry leaders including the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow; CEO of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Datuk Wira Arham bin Abdul Rahman; Chairman of Penang State Trade Industry and Entrepreneur Development Committee, YB Dato’ Haji Abdul Halim Bin Haji Hussain; and CEO of InvestPenang, Dato’ Loo Lee Lian were present at the ceremony, which included a ribbon cutting, lion dance, cultural performance and site tour.

The Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow was also present during the ceremony. Yeow said, “Penang is pleased to be the choice location for Indium Corporation’s new manufacturing facility. The company’s investment decision serves as an acknowledgement of the skilled talent, well-developed infrastructure and resilient environment the state holds. Being widely regarded as one of the major players in the global semiconductor industry, Penang’s robust electrical and electronics (E&E) ecosystem is believed to have paved the way for sustainable industry development, offering a competent platform for the players along the supply chain to participate and thrive.”

Welcoming the Indium Corporation’s presence in Malaysia, the CEO of MIDA, Datuk Wira Arham Abdul Rahman said that it marks its confidence in the continuous sustainable growth of the nation’s economy. He further added, “The establishment of the company’s new manufacturing facility will further solidify Malaysia’s ecosystem and nurture the country’s local supply chain that will contribute to opening new opportunities not only for the metals industry but also for the machinery and equipment (M&E), automotive, E&E and semiconductor industries.”

Indium Corporation’s President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr Ross Berntson stated, “Indium Corporation is proud to continue its more than 40-year history of doing business in Malaysia with the grand opening of our new manufacturing facility in Penang. This new facility will enable us to further support our customers in automotive, semiconductor, power electronics, e-mobility, industrial and computing and other markets.”

The company had earlier announced an RM250 million investment for its expansion in Malaysia. It must be noted that Indium’s Malaysia Tech Hub is also housed in Penang. It aids in the development of electronics assembly expertise and customer service, as well as a logistics and manufacturing support centre.

1934-born Indium Corporation is a leading materials refiner, smelter, manufacturer, and supplier to the global electronics, semiconductor, thin-film, and thermal management markets. The company has global technical support and factories and its products include solders and fluxes; thermal interface materials; sputtering targets; indium, gallium, germanium, and tin metals and inorganic compounds.

Kuala Lumpur Sentral-headquartered MIDA is the Malaysian principal promotion agency under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) to oversee and drive investments into the manufacturing and services sectors in Malaysia.
