Wearable sensor company, Humon, has unveiled its updated threshold test– a feature that will empower athletes to understand the limits of their bodies and improve performance.

The feature will provide athletes with downloadable data and an on-demand analysis of threshold performance.

The Humon Hex is the first clinically validated wearable to monitor muscle oxygen levels in real-time, providing personalized training insights. The athlete is guided through a display of colored training zones that can be used to adjust pace, available on a phone, watch, or bike computer.

Traditionally measured in a laboratory setting, lactate threshold is the point at which lactate builds up in the blood stream, indicating that pace or intensity cannot be held. Threshold is considered one of the single best markers for endurance fitness. With the Hex, muscle oxygen is measured directly and threshold point is predicted accurately without lab equipment.

By measuring the amount of oxygen that a muscle group is using, athletes can reach the optimum workout intensity level without exceeding their limits, explains Alessandro Babini, CEO and co-founder of Humon.

With Humon, he says they want to make this tech available to all athletes.

About Humon Hex

Humon Hex can identify your body’s limit in real time and prescribe the perfect pace & workout intensities.

The Humon Hex uses near-infrared spectroscopy to measure the hemoglobin saturation in muscles (also referred to as SmO2). LEDs emit light into the tissue and detectors measure the intensity of light that propagates through the muscle. Since oxyhemoglobin (HbO2) and deoxyhemoglobin (Hb) have different absorption spectra in the near-infrared wavelength range, the SmO2 can be calculated.

The Humon Hex helps endurance athletes train smarter by monitoring the way their muscles are using oxygen in real-time and empowering them with the information they need to know when and how hard to push themselves.

It can provide real time feedback either via Phone App or Compatible Garmin Watch. Users can also link up a bluetooth heart rate monitor for more indepth training/testing and then log into the Web Platform to view your results.

Born out of MIT, Humon is on a mission to empower athletes with actionable insights about their body through integrated technology.
