Fuji NXT 2NMTronics helps Delta Electronics India Pvt Ltd to achieve economies of large scale, coupled with faster output times and maximum efficiency

Delta Electronics India Pvt Ltd is a leading player in the EMS segment, known for its high precision equipment and state-of-art technology. Delta Electronics has state-of-art R&D centres located across the country, which cater to the myriad needs of the electronics industry. Besides working on core products and applications, the company is working on complete solutions for smart grid as well as automotive applications.

The company has five plants located in Uttarakhand which cater to different activities like magnetics, EMS services, complete assembly of electronic products, testing and packing activities. Its EMS plant is located in Pipalsana, Uttarakhand. This plant commenced operations around five years back and has a workforce of over 2000 employees. Electronics circuits, CFLs and LEDs combined, the plant has a production capacity of around 300,000 units per day.

Opting for an efficient engineering partner

Supporting the company’s various initiatives has been NMTronics. The company has helped ease production hiccups at Delta Electronics and also offered a long term assurance of quality, which is crucial in this highly competitive segment. Specialising in the production of LED panel drivers and LED mounting components, Delta Electronics has evolved into a key player in the field of LED manufacturing. And it is SMT machines from NMTronics that Delta Electronics operates on. While CFLs remain a part of the product portfolio of the company, Delta Electronics intends to focus more on LEDs, which are poised to witness high growth in the years to come.

Delta Electronics has been associated with NMTronics for the past four months. Initially, the company purchased one machine from NMTronics. It recently ordered two more, of which, one has already been installed and the other will be installed shortly. Overall, these three machines at Delta Electronics’ EMS facility will have 10 modules from NMTronics.

The NXT 2 and NXT 2C SMT machines from NMTronics that are installed in the company’s EMS plant might lead to the company using NMTronics machines for their other plants as well.

Compulsions in a competitive industrial environment

The Indian market presents a lucrative opportunity for global LED players to set up a manufacturing base and avail the benefits of low costs and high manpower availability. There are also a growing number of domestic manufacturers aiming to become the preferred suppliers to these multinationals. This has intensified competition and EMS companies have upped the ante to meet the surging demand. Making its foray into the world of LED manufacturing, Delta Electronics required faster throughput, coupled with energy- and cost-efficient SMT machines. Also, these machines needed to be ergonomically designed, in order to save space and be easy to use.

Addressing key operational hurdles

After purchasing and operating its first machine, Delta Electronics found the quality, performance and productivity of the NMTronics machines to be top-notch. This, coupled with excellent after sales service, compelled Delta Electronics to go ahead with two more SMT machines from NMTronics.

The company claims that these machines help in reducing the downtime considerably. The efficiency is high and the precise engineering offers a high quality end product. OEMs today demand this level of precision across all product ranges. The scale of manufacturing is also higher than other machines.

Earlier, achieving economies of scale was an area of concern for Delta Electronics. With the introduction of NMTronics’ SMT machines, higher levels of productivity could be achieved at a faster rate. The higher automation levels in these machines lead to less use of manpower, while compact designs make them easy to use and save valuable floor space within the factory.

Major challenges faced

The supply of components and manufacturing parts is quite poor in India compared to countries like China, where parts can be procured easily. In India, electronics manufacturers need to import in large volumes in order to compensate for low domestic production. Delta Electronics believes that there is an urgent need to develop an indigenous manufacturing base for electronic components. This could substantially reduce India’s dependence on imports, and help in slashing the prices of products like LEDs, which need to be promoted at various levels.

The ‘Make in India’ initiative by the government is promoting domestic manufacturing of electronic components, which is expected to bolster internal growth. Electronics manufacturing in India is moving in a positive direction, in response to the latest trends in consumer electronics. Entertainment, health and consumer durables comprise the largest segments in the electronics manufacturing industry, particularly in emerging markets like India.
