RX660 5V 32-Bit MCUs Launched by Renesas

Renesas recently announced the release of a new addition to the RX 32-bit MCU product line, the RX660 group of MCUs are the latest addition to the lineup which supports voltages up to 5 volts and is able to handle high levels of electromagnetic interference according to the company. The newest release is Renesas’ high-end RX MCU devices intended for general purpose applications and support 5V and claims to be the first to have a built-in CAN FD controller that facilitates faster data communication. Due to the high voltage operating range of such MCUs, the need for external noise-suppression addons is eliminated which are currently essential for a lot of 3V MCUs.

“Noise suppression is essential for home appliances and industrial products since ambient electromagnetic waves in the surrounding environment can cause system malfunctions or reduce performance,” said Sakae Ito, Vice President of the IoT Platform Business Division at Renesas. “We introduced the RX660 in response to strong demand from customers who need to design products with high power supply voltages.”

Renesas has developed the RX660 by utilising its RXv3 core (6.00 CoreMark/MHz) with the highest operating frequency of 120 MHz, which can offer high performance and power efficiency. The devices also come with large-capacity ROM of up to 1 megabyte and RAM of up to 128 kilobytes and are can be obtained in many package options (48-pin to 144-pin). Particularly, the effective pin count for general-purpose input output pins is 10 per cent more than on the earlier RX210, which is also 5V compatible. Furthermore, the 144-pin version of the RX660 has an effective pin count of 134, 11 more than on the RX210. With this increase in input and output count, more sensors can be connected to an MCU for a given package, making it more practical to upgrade existing systems.
