Nexperia’s Energy Harvesting PMIC Now Powers Eco-Friendly Low-Power Devices

Up to 90% of the cost of the BOM can be saved with a capacitive DC-DC converter.

In order to make and improve the performance of low-power internet of things (IoT) and other embedded applications, Nexperia today revealed the expansion of its line of Power ICs with Energy Harvesting solutions. The NEH2000BY is a high-performance power management integrated circuit (PMIC) that uses energy gathered from ambient sources, such as light (which can be collected using a photovoltaic cell), to replenish a battery or storage capacitor. As a consequence, Nexperia’s NEH2000BY will make it possible to create self-powered, compact, and environmentally friendly electronic devices. Furthermore, the annual production and disposal of billions of batteries can be lessened with the aid of this energy harvesting option.

Designing energy harvesting solutions that can be up to 20 times smaller than other competitive products and do not require manual optimisation for specific applications is made much simpler by Nexperia’s NEH2000BY PMIC. The PMIC also had a 12 mm2 assembly area, which simplified PCB design, greatly decreased total BOM, and was designed without inductors.

Energy harvesting solutions must be flexible to accommodate changing ambient energy sources if they are to achieve the greatest conversion efficiency. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), an adaptive algorithm, is used by the NEH2000BY to optimise the way it transfers harvested energy and reach the highest possible average conversion efficiency of up to 80%. The PMIC can respond to environmental changes in less than a second thanks to this particular MPPT algorithm’s distinct combination of speed and accuracy. This greatly increases the amount of energy harvested over the course of a day and is significantly quicker than any other solution that is presently on the market, greatly extending the range of applications.

Additionally, the NEH2000BY makes it simpler for designers to power devices with ambient energy thanks to its self-optimization capabilities and ability to work autonomously without the need for pre-programming. With the help of Nexperia’s energy harvesting solutions, applications requiring up to several milliwatts of power, such as wireless IoT nodes, wearable smart tags, and electronic shelf labels, can economically gather energy from a variety of ambient sources.
