Micron Technology CEO Receives 2023 Robert N. Noyce Award

  • The Robert N. Noyce Award is named in honor of semiconductor industry pioneer Robert N. Noyce, co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel Corporation.

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has announced Sanjay Mehrotra, President and CEO of Micron Technology, as the recipient of the 2023 Robert N. Noyce Award. The SIA bestows This accolade annually in recognition of exceptional contributions to the semiconductor industry in technology and public policy. 

John Neuffer, President, and CEO of SIA, commended Mehrotra, highlighting his illustrious career and dedication to critical causes. He is a highly accomplished leader in the industry and a tireless advocate for STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education initiatives and a diverse and inclusive semiconductor workforce. He has greatly advanced industry, technology, and workforce for over four decades.

He joined Micron Technology in 2017, following a career at SanDisk Corp., where he served as a co-founder and led the company from its inception in 1988 until its acquisition in 2016. During his tenure as President and CEO from 2011 to 2016, SanDisk became an industry-leading his leadership and engineering expertise have been pivotal in the development of foundational technologies, including high-capacity flash memory that now plays a ubiquitous role in modern computing.

He continues to drive advancements in semiconductor manufacturing on a global scale. The company’s commitment to technological excellence is exemplified by its investments in cutting-edge memory manufacturing facilities in Idaho and New York, marking the first greenfield U.S. memory manufacturing fab built in two decades.

His dedication extends beyond technological innovation. He is deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable culture, advocating for increased diversity in engineering, technology, and leadership roles. His leadership efforts have resulted in comprehensive global pay equity for underrepresented groups and a remarkable achievement of 50% female representation on the company’s board of directors. He actively supports community development through initiatives promoting STEM education, community investment, and volunteerism. His educational background includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a Stanford Graduate School of Business Executive Program graduate.

After receiving the Noyce Award, Mehrotra expressed his gratitude and commitment to the semiconductor industry’s ongoing growth and innovation. “It is a great honor to receive the Noyce Award and join the ranks of previous recipients, individuals who have helped build the semiconductor industry into one of the most innovative, influential, and important sectors in the world, I look forward to continuing to collaborate across our industry to push the boundaries of semiconductor technology and manufacturing to meet the future demand and the tremendous opportunity facing our industry in the years ahead.”
