  • Masdar and PLN will play a pivotal role in advancing these sustainability goals
  • This project can provide clean energy for approximately 50,000 households

Masdar has collaborated with Indonesia’s state-owned utility company, PLN, to develop Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar power plant.

Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of PLN Group, Darmawan Prasodjo, and President Director of PLN NP, Ruly Firmansyah, signed the agreements.

The recent partnership between Masdar and PLN has already yielded significant results, notably the inauguration of Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar power plant, the Cirata project. With a capacity of 145 MWac (192 MW peak), this facility, situated on the Cirata reservoir in West Java, Indonesia, has the capacity to provide clean energy for approximately 50,000 households while reducing carbon emissions by 214,000 tons annually.

Furthermore, the collaboration includes a framework agreement aimed at conducting a joint study to potentially triple Cirata’s capacity, reaching an impressive 500 MW. The companies have also committed to exploring renewable energy opportunities on a global scale, along with the potential for green hydrogen development.

Green hydrogen has the potential to significantly decarbonize challenging industries such as steelmaking, construction, transportation, and aviation. Given their abundant solar resources, both the UAE and Indonesia are well-positioned to become hubs for green hydrogen production, aligning with their ambitious net-zero targets. This strengthened partnership between Masdar and PLN will play a pivotal role in advancing these sustainability goals.

Al Ramahi said, “Masdar looks forward to expanding its pioneering clean energy work with PLN. We were extremely proud to inaugurate the 145 MW (192 MWp) floating solar power plant with our valued partners earlier this month. The Cirata project shows how innovation can be used to meet multiple needs at once. The plant powers homes, cuts emissions, has created jobs and reduced land use because it is built on water. As the world looks for urgent solutions to the climate crisis at COP28, we need more smart projects like Cirata. With its robust economy and abundant renewable resources, Southeast Asia is a key investment destination for Masdar. Through our deepening cooperation with PLN, we will continue pioneering innovation in solar, green hydrogen and other key areas in support of the region’s energy transition.”
