K K Rohatgi, technical advisor

Binay Opto Electronics Pvt Ltd has been a pioneer in the field of LED illumination in India and the world, since the last 30 years. Under the able direction of its technical advisor, Kumar K Rohatgi, the company has invented many LED lighting products and has many patents to its credit.

The group first started out manufacturing filament lamps in 1947, when K K Rohatgi set up India’s first indigenous electric lamp factory in Patna. He is a member of the ETDC-23 committee of ISI (Indian Standards Institute), which is the group in charge of drafting the specifications for all electric lamps. ISI standard specifications in India carry his name, as many were drafted by him.

Over the years, Binay has manufactured almost all kinds of electric lamps – railway signalling lamps, aircraft runway lamps, naval lamps, infrared lamps, photographic lamps, HPMV lamps, and fluorescent tubes.

In 1965, the group collaborated with Toshiba to manufacture fluorescent tubes on high speed automatic machines. And by 1970, Binay had developed T5 fluorescent tubes for emergency light applications.

In 1983, the company switched its focus to LED technology, and was awarded its first Indian patent for the energy-saving LED pilot light in 1986. Subsequently, through continuous R&D, Binay developed a very wide range of LED signalling products, including warning and alarm lights, crane bus bar indicators and LED railway signal lights.

In 1995, Binay invented the LED aviation obstruction light, which has a life of 20 years (thus eliminating the issues of replacement and maintenance at immense heights such as on tall chimney stacks), and also saves 95 per cent of energy. It received a patent for this invention and a host of other patents have followed since then. In 1998, the firm developed India’s first LED traffic signal lights. The same year, it set up a production plant to manufacture chip level LEDs as well as its own revolutionary LED chip-on-board design products for customised and special applications.

In 2002, Binay started manufacturing high power LEDs of 1 watt and 3 watt, and multi-chip LEDs of 10 watt rating. In 2003, it began the manufacture of white LEDs using phosphor technology.

Binay has developed a range of LED street light models since 2004. In 2007, it developed its eagle-eye LED streetlight (which has become the firm’s most popular model), to replace conventional HPSV streetlights (resulting in a power saving of 70 per cent per light) with a performance life of 20 years. The BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) has satisfactorily tested Binay’s 120W eagle-eye LED street light at Bantala (Calcutta), as well as at Delhi, where potential users have appreciated the technical superiority of Binay’s design, and tender proposals have been drafted to procure eagle-eye streetlights based on the firm’s design.

Since 1992, Binay has been manufacturing its architectural range of LED lights for decorative and illuminating lighting applications. Today, it has a vast range of single colour and RGB coloured LED lighting devices for applications such as cove lighting, mood lighting, building facade lighting, RGB effect lighting (capable of generating up to 16 million colours) and underwater lighting. The firm has worked with leading architects, as well as premier builders such as DLF, Unitech and Bengal Ambuja on several LED lighting projects. It also works with several international lighting consultants.

Binay has done the LED lighting in the new Claridges Hotel at Surajkund, New Delhi, and at the Ista Hotels in Amritsar and Pune. It has also undertaken LED lighting projects at the Four Seasons Hotel in Mumbai, and has an ongoing project at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Pune.

In 2008, its technical advisor (and founder) Kumar K Rohatgi was felicitated by Dr Ajay Mathur, director, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, for his work on LEDs and LED lighting in India.
