India Achieves 166 GW of Renewable Energy Target

A total capacity of 172.72 GW from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources has been installed in India

Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister RK Singh declared the numbers in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

India has achieved 165.94GW of renewable energy generation capacity till October, against the target of 175GW by 2022.

Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R. K. Singh said on November 8, “Against the target of achieving 175 GW of renewable energy installed capacity by 2022, a total of 165.94 GW of renewable energy capacity (including large hydro) has been installed in the country as on October 31, 2022.”

A capacity of 76.13 GW (of renewables) is under various stages of implementation, while a capacity of 36.44 GW is under different bidding stages, Singh informed the House, reported PTI.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy reiterated its goal of increasing renewable energy generation capacity to 500 GW by 2030 in September 2022. A report by Arthur D Little, titled ‘Powering India’s Energy Vision 2030’ stated that India would need strategic investments of more than $300 billion to achieve this target.

Earlier at COP 26, Prime Minister Modi had announced India’s plans to reduce the emissions intensity of India’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 45% by 2030.

Singh also stated that a total of 172.72 GW of capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources had been installed in the country as on October 31, 2022, which included 119.09 GW of renewable energy, 46.85 GW of large hydro and 6.78 GW of nuclear power capacity.
This contributed to 42.26% of the total installed generation capacity of 408.71 GW in the country, as on October 31, 2022.

Despite the welcoming numbers, India still lags on its target for the year 2022. In 2015, the Government had set a target of installing 175,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by the year 2022, out of which 60,000 MW was targeted to come from wind power projects.

Singh stated that up till October 31, 2022, wind projects of 41,843 MW capacity had been commissioned and 11,734 MW capacity were at various stages of implementation. In addition to that, bids for 1700 MW capacity of wind projects have been issued.
