According to a report by the Economic Times, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said that electric vehicles will become cheaper than combustion vehicles in three years. This will happen as the price of battery packs of EVs is expected to fall by almost 51 per cent per unit added Kant.

Kant added that the price of battery packs of EVs is expected to fall to $76 per kilowatt hour (or unit) in three years. At present, it is $156 per unit. He said that given the size and scale of growth potential, the Indian industry must be the biggest driver of change to make the country the centre for manufacturing EVs.

According to the report, Kant also said that there are two challenges to work on. One of them is to ensure new form of urbanisation that will be based on public transportation. The other will be to ensure that India does not lose out among global manufactures of tomorrow.

Kant stressed on strengthening public transport. He said that it is essential that innovative and sustainable development is backed by embedding the cities with public transportation and not private transport. He encouraged the use of CNG-based transport for travel within cities, liquefied natural gas (LNG) for intercity. He stressed on the need to focus on hydrogen fuel in the long run for public transport.
