Thursday, May 01, 2014: Government of India is surely serious about localisation when it comes to electronics and telecom equipments. In the latest, the government has instructed Department of Electronics and Information Technology to ensure that telecom vendors in the country meet the localisation targets. For this, a Standardisation Testing & Quality Certification (STQC) directorate has been mandated, which is a part of the Department of Electronics & IT. This is to ensure that the telecom vendors are able to meet the local value addition targets for security-sensitive telecom and IT products used in mobile networks.
As per the government note issued on this, network vendors will have to include the local vendors and India arms of the global manufacturers of IT and telecom equipments used in telecom networks.
The note said, “STQC will be strengthened to oversee compliance testing of domestic value addition by electronics vendors.” The monitoring will be done by the flagship electronics test labs of STQC in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. These efforts are made in line with the preferential market access (PMA) policy, that calls for local sourcing of the sensitive telecom equipments for government contracts.
