Friday, May 02, 2014: In a bid to further strenghthen its position in the overseas market, state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) recently signed an agreement with Yemen’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy to set up a number of solar photovoltaic (PV)-based power plants at various loactions in the Gilf nation. BHEL Chairman and Managing Director B Prasada Rao and Yemen’s Minister of Electricity and Energy Saleh Hassan Sumie jointly signed the agreement.
It must be noted that BHEL is already executing a 400-MW gas turbine-based power plant: Marib Phase-II in Yemen. The fesh agreement further consolidates BHEL’s position in the market as also effectively reinforces its commitment to provide renewable power solutions to the general audience.
Earlier, BHEL entered the solar wafer business with a Rs 30 billion Plant in Sakoli, Maharashtra thereby becoming the first ever domestic company to venture into the field of solar wafer manufacture: an essential component of solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. It will start manufacturing solar wafers along with PV cells, modules and solar panels soon. The company will make use of use indigenous technology to manufacture the wafers cut from crystalline silicon ingots, that will help lower the cost of PV cells.
