The Gurgaon administration has decided to install a full-fledged outdoor surveillance system across the city over the next two years to help the police in carrying out investigations and better traffic management.
Estimated to cost around Rs 40 crore, the project will have CCTV cameras manning the public places and will be implemented by the Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority. The city currently has around 60,000 CCTV cameras and they, too, will be integrated into the surveillance system.
As per TOI report, V. Umashankar, the Gurgaon municipal corporation commissioner said “According to police estimates, there are around 60,000 cameras that have been installed by resident associations and private organisations in the city. We aim to use these cameras as part of the new system.”
Footage from the cameras will be monitored from the police commissioner’s office and can be accessed by all civic bodies. The new surveillance system is expected to not only help the police track down errant vehicles, but also act as a deterrent for anti-socials and criminals.
The system is also likely to help in the better monitoring of development projects and the city’s traffic.
As part of the pilot project, 61 CCTV cameras have been installed in Old Gurgaon at 15 points between Sector 4/7 Chowk and Sadar Bazaar.
It’s good news. The government will install CCTV in public places but we have also to install CCTV cameras in our residential or commercial areas to reduce anti-social act and keep ourself safe.
