Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the Government-owned telecommunication company, said on Friday that it provided leased circuit connectivity for India’s first multi-modal waterways project, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 12 in Varanasi.

BSNL was asked for providing telecommunication inter-connectivity between different ports for seamless operations in a time-bound manner, the telecom said in a statement.

The state-run telecom has been associated with the waterways project to provide leased circuits connectivity or River Information Service at varied locations en-route the project, the company said.

The project’s major aim is to provide inland waterways as an environment-friendly and economical means of transportation, particularly for the movement of cargo. The project is also aimed at developing the stretch of the Ganga river between Haldia (main port) and Varanasi for navigation of larger vessels.

Revamping its infrastructure

BSNL has been working to revamp its infrastructure for mobile services, core network and broadband. The telecom company is now going through a massive upgradation of its infrastructure and working on the expansion of network for 2G, 3G and 4G network services. This also includes installation of more than 50,000 base transceiver stations (BTS). According to the plan, state-run company will include an overall of 52,552 BTSs all over the country in the current financial year. For this project, the telecom operator has earmarked Rs 4300 crore investment.

In addition, BSNL is also involved in several state-run projects such as BharatNet that is aimed at connecting 2.5 lakh gram panchayats (GPs) all over the country, for improving telecommunication connectivity in North East region and network connectivity in the left-wing extremist areas.
