Airtel would have a transformation strategy in place to deploy all its 900 MHz band spectrum for 4G network

In its bid to leverage the rising demand for fourth-generation services and competition with Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bharti Airtel, Indian global telecommunications services provider, is putting in place a transition strategy in its phone networks to deploy all its 900 MHz band spectrum for 4G network. The telecom major is driving its core 2G and 3G users base to quickly go for 4G in its bid to grab quality data consumers.

Gopal Vittal, Chief Executive Officer, Bharti Airtel said on Friday that the company is accelerating measures for deploying its premium 900 MHz spectrum band purely for 4G. Currently, the band is being used by the company only for 2G voice services.

Growth in 4G services demand

Vittal further said that there is a dramatic growth in the demand of 4G. Over a period of time, the company will use the 900 Mhz band mainly serve the 4G consumers, whereas 2G services will remain available on 1800 Mhz spectrum band.

Airtel would have a transformation strategy in place in its move to deploy all its 900 MHz band spectrum for 4G network, he stated.

The company’s chief executive also hinted towards the possible phase out of 3G network in the near future. “The expiry of 3G technology is quickly drawing near as individually 3G services are hardly generating any revenue,” he said.

Vittal said that Airtel has reframed its frequencies in the 900 MHz band for 4G services in the state of Karnataka. The company would repeat the process in other regions to push its 4G customers share across the country in its ongoing data war against its rivals Reliance Jio and the new market leader, Vodafone Idea.

Currently, Bharti Airtel has 116 units of airwaves in 900 MHz band in 16 circles that is being mainly used by the company for 2G services.
