NHPC Diversifies Company’s Business to Include Solar Power Projects

NHPC has diversified its business to include solar power projects in its portfolio. A mini ratna category-I PSU, NHPC is known as one of India’s largest hydro-power utility company. The company would now onwards act as an an intermediary procurer through solar power developers.

The PSU, as per a report by Mercom India, has already commissioned solar projects in Dindigui and Theni districts of Tamil Nadu. The company has 50 MW worth of solar projects in the same state.

NHPC had recently raised Rs 7.5 billion ($99.6 million) via the private placement of bonds. The same was done at an interest rate of 6.8 per cent per annum for a loan tenure of ten years.

NHPC CMD met Governor of Ladkh recently

A.K. Singh, CMD, NHPC had recently met R.K. Mathur, Governor of UT of Ladakh to discuss NHPC’s proposals on implementation of various identified Hydro and Solar Power Projects in Leh-Ladakh region. The meeting was held to discuss NHPC’s proposals and way forward on implementation of various identified Hydro and Solar Power Projects in Leh-Ladakh region.

During the discussion, CMD, NHPC intimated the Governor about achievement of NHPC in harnessing hydro power potential of Ladakh region by commissioning 45 MW Nimmo Bazgo in Leh and 44 MW Chutak Hydro Power Projects in Kargil. He also presented future plan of NHPC to develop three. Hydro Power Projects viz. Khalsi (80 MW), Kanyunche (45 MW) and Takmaching (30 MW) in Ladakh.

The meeting also had a discussion about a solar power project of capacity 50 MW at Phyang. While explaining the techno-commercial viability of projects, CMD, NHPC proposed that taking advantage of high solar irradiance of the region, blending of Hydro Power with solar power may also be explored.
