Wistron will invest Rs 1,947 crore to develop a new assembly facility in Bengaluru for manufacturing smartphones, internet of things (IOT) products and bio-tech devices.
Apple’s Taiwanese supplier Wistron is reportedly planning to increase its production footprint in India by expanding the scope of manufacturing beyond mobile phones to the internet of things (IoT) and biotech devices.
It is learnt that the company is tripling its proposed investment for setting up a new manufacturing hub in Bengaluru to further boost its production capacity.
As reported by the Times of India, Wistron has increased its proposed investments in the Narasapura facility in Kolar district three-fold to Rs 1,947 crore ($278.143 million) from its earlier target of Rs 682 crore ($ 97.429 million).
Narasapura facility to commence operations in August
Quoting government officials, the report further said that the company is now targeting to provide employment to 10,000 people (earlier the target was 6,000) at the Narasapura facility, which will commence operations in August.
The 43-acre land will be one of the biggest clusters in the state to manufacture smartphones, and IoT and biotech devices, it added.
Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing India is the wholly-owned subsidiary of SMS Infocomm Singapore. Its ICT Service Management Solutions unit currently assembles Apple’s low-cost iPhone SE model in Bengaluru.
A few days back, the IT Ministry had approved Wistron’s Rs 5,000-crore plan to make high-end Apple devices. However, it still awaits approval from the Indian Cabinet to start construction.
Once approved, the company will start manufacturing Apple iPhone 8 in addition to the iPhone SE, 6S, and AirPods in India.
