The Kofu Factory that closed in October 2014 is all set to re-open in 2024, “to enhance production capacity for power semiconductors such as IGBTs”. Y90 billion has been invested by Renesas in Kai City, Yamanashi Prefecture, citing the rise of electric vehicles as motivation.
This factory was closed when it ran 150mm and 200mm wafer lines in its 18,000m2 cleanroom.
“This investment enables us to have our largest wafer fabrication line dedicated to power semiconductors, which are key to realising decarbonization,” said Renesas president and CEO Hidetoshi Shibata. “We will continue to conduct necessary investments to enhance our in-house production capability, while strengthening ties with outsource partners. To address the mid to longer term demand growth, Renesas remains committed to ensuring security of supply in order to provide our customers with the best possible support.”
