Despite Corona, Semiconductor Sales Have Increased During The Last Three Months

Sales during the second quarter of 2020 were $103.6 billion, an increase of 5.1 per cent over the second quarter of 2019

$35.2 billion in July 2020, $34.5 billion in June 2020 and $35.0 billion in May 2020, the semiconductor sales have been increasing year-on-year (YoY) in 2020. These figures are sourced from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). It is to be noted here that SIA represents 95 per cent of the U.S. semiconductor industry by revenue and nearly two-thirds of non-U.S. chip firms.

“The global semiconductor market has remained largely resistant to global macroeconomic headwinds through the first seven months of the year, with sales in July increasing on both a year-to-year and month-to-month basis, but substantial market uncertainty remains for the rest of the year,” said John Neuffer, SIA president and CEO.

He added, “Sales into the Americas remained strong in July, increasing 26 percent year-to-year, and year-to-year sales were up globally among both memory and non-memory products.”

Region-wise sales

SIA also noted that regionally, sales increased on a year-to-year basis in the Americas (26.3 per cent), China (3.5 per cent), and Asia Pacific/All Other (1.4 per cent). However, these decreased in Japan (-0.4 per cent) and Europe (-14.7 per cent). On a month-to-month basis (July), sales increased across all regions: Asia Pacific/All Other (4.5 per cent), Japan (3.4 per cent), Europe (3.2 per cent), the Americas (0.9 per cent), and China (0.5 per cent).

Comparatively sales in June were 0.3 per cent less than the May 2020 total of $34.6 billion. Sales during the second quarter of 2020 were $103.6 billion, an increase of 5.1 per cent over the second quarter of 2019, but a small decrease of 0.9 percent compared to the first quarter of 2020. Worldwide sales of semiconductors were $34.5 billion in June 2020, an increase of 5.1 percent from the June 2019 total of $32.9 billion.

“Second-quarter semiconductor sales were roughly flat compared to the first quarter, and the global industry continues to post year-to-year sales increases, but significant uncertainty remains for the second half of the year due to ongoing macroeconomic headwinds. Sales into the Americas stood out in June, increasing nearly 30 percent year-to-year,” Nauffer had said.

Sales of semiconductors were $35.0 billion in May 2020, an increase of 5.8 per cent from the May 2019 total of $33.0 billion and 1.5 per cent more than the April 2020 total of $34.4 billion. SIA, in May 2020, had mentioned that the global semiconductor market in May remained largely resistant to the widespread economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The association in April,  released a set of government policy recommendations for sustaining and strengthening America’s global leadership in semiconductor technology and ensuring the United States wins the race to harness the transformative, semiconductor-enabled technologies of the future, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and advanced wireless networks.
