Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia is likely to launch its first smart pole deployed at the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) premise on March 21.
Nokia’s smart pole initiative is a part of its intelligent infrastructure transformation program, reported Economic Times. The new smart pole opportunity would allow the state-controlled service provider to showcase its capabilities for future smart cities.
In October 2018, the fourth-largest telco selected Nokia to supply, install and maintain smart telecom poles across telecom circles to boost localised smart city initiatives driven by Centre’s Smart Cities Mission.

The equipment firm earlier said that it would integrate poles with smart LED lighting systems, CCTV cameras, digital billboards and environmental sensors that could also have a revenue potential for the stressed operator.

However, BSNL is yet to get the department of telecom (DoT) nod for commercially rolling out 4G services while the Narendra Modi-led government is eyeing to launch fifth-generation or 5G technology together with matured markets worldwide in 2020.
Finland-based telecom technology vendor, as per alliance, will also provide its compact and deployable solutions using LTE technology for mission-critical communications to assist the service provider in its disaster relief efforts.
