The total mobile subscriptions in India are expected to grow at CAGR of 3 per cent from about 1.2 billion in 2018 to 1.42 billion in 2024. Ericsson, in its report, has also projected the global smartphone subscriptions to hit the 7.2 billion mark in 2024.

Mobile data growth

The Ericsson report states that the mobile data traffic will increase to 12 exabytes (EB) by 2024 from the current 3 EB per month. It cites videos as the key driver of data usage and these will further raise the monthly data consumption from 6.8 gigabytes (GB) in 2018 to 15 GB by that period. The growth rate has been projected at 14 per cent.

LTE in India

Nitin Bansal, Head, Network Solutions, South East Asia, Oceania and Ericsson India, said that long-term evolution or LTE rollouts would become the most dominant access technology by 2024 accounting for nearly 81 per cent of all mobile subscriptions in India compared to 30 per cent in 2018.

According to the report, LTE subscriptions in India will grow at CAGR of 22 per cent from 350 million in 2018 to 1.15 billion in 2024, representing about 81 per cent of all mobile subscriptions.

5G growth

Ericsson’s report projects that 5G will reach more than 40 per cent of the global population coverage and 1.5 billion subscriptions for enhanced mobile broadband by the end of 2024. It has stated that the key drivers for 5G deployment will include increased network capacity, lower cost per gigabyte and new use case requirements.
