The Government is looking for 2020 as the timeline for deploying 5G network in the country, Sinha said.

Union Minister of Communications Manoj Sinha emphasised on the need for 5G connectivity in India and said that it is important for the Government that the deployment of 5G network took place as soon as possible.

The Government is looking for 2020 as the timeline for deploying 5G network in the country, he said, while speaking at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2018 on Saturday.

“5G is definitely the future of digital communications and deploying it as soon as possible is imperative for this government,” Sinha said.

We cannot overlook the significance of 5G network. It would help the country to leapfrog infrastructure bottlenecks and bridge the digital divide, the Minister said.

Technology has to be utilised for eliminating the gender rift and the rural-urban divide, among other differences, to make sure that no citizen of this country is left behind in this phase of transformation, he noted.

In addition, the Minister launched 250 applications for mobile that are developed by start-ups. While launching the applications, Sinha said, “The sheer volume and quality of what I see here is amazing. Who knows, we may right now be releasing the WhatsApp and Google Maps of tomorrow.”

Major emphasis on 5G in NDCP

The Minister also spoke about the latest draft of National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP) 2018. “In the new communications policy, the Government has tried to address the licensing and regulatory framework. In addition, the Government has put major emphasis on futuristic technology like internet of things (IoT) and 5G,” he said.

Earlier, Sinha has said that the Government was playing a critical role and putting efforts towards the proliferation of 5G network across India, in association with industry players.

Today, the highest mobile data consumption is in India. To further put efforts in this path, the Government is ensuring that there is availability of infrastructure for all the service providers on unbiased basis,” he had said.
