Qualcomm Partners with Manufacturers to Develop Wearable Devices

The US-based chipmaker, Qualcomm has collaborated with some leading original design manufacturers (ODMs) to make wearable devices

Qualcomm has announced a series of partnerships to develop wearable devices like smartwatches, kid watches and smart trackers based on its Snapdragon Wear chipset platforms.

It has partnered with Taipei-headquartered Compal Electronics, China-based Longcheer, Huaqin, Thundersoft, Franklin Wireless and France-based software maker Smartcom to support its clients to further progress in the wearable device-making process. Pankaj Kedia, Senior Director, Product Marketing, Qualcomm Technologies, said that collaborating with the original design manufacturers was important to drive the ecosystem of wearable devices by aiding the company’s customers to make innovative wearables and introduce it at the global level.

He views the focus segment as a growing venture and Qualcomm is eyeing to tap into the evolving segment with its range of products like Snapdragon Wear 3100 for Wear operating system (OS) by Google smartwatches, Snapdragon Wear 2500 for open source Android-based 4G kid watches and Snapdragon Wear 1100 and 1200 for smart tracking solutions.

Qualcomm’s clients are spanned across premium watchmakers across the world. These include the Fossil Group, Louis Vuitton and Montblanc among others. The chipmaker focusses on making smartwatches long-lasting and improving their uses.

According to a Forbes report, the smart wearable devices market is expected to double by 2022. Its market is expected to reach $27 billion, selling off around 233 million units.
