February 23, 2015: Ajmer will be the first railway station in Rajasthan to run on solar power. North Western Railway’s Ajmer division has decided that the power demand of the station will be met through solar energy. According to a feasibility report of this project which has been released recently, fixing up the solar cells will cost Rs 11.59 million to produce estimated 40KW of power every year.
The project is expected to save Rs 5.2 million annually on Ajmer railway station’s electricity bills. According to a report by a leading national daily, a senior railway officer commented on this saying, “The solar panel will be fixed under the corporate social responsibility. The life of a solar panel is expected to be 25 years.” 75,000 units of electricity will be saved annually by the station under this scheme. In the second phase of solar installations, the solar panels will be fixed at Bhilwara and Abu Road stations.
