Datoms Revolutionising OEMs With Smart And Connected Products

Datoms, a deeptech IoT startup based in Bhubaneswar, enhances machines to make them smarter, thereby improving customers’ lives and helping OEMs take their products to the next level.

India has experienced significant technological advancements in recent years, with a notable rise in the smartification of products ranging from home appliances to vehicles. Amiya Samantaray, the Co-founder, and CEO of Datoms, recognised this trend and established the startup in Bhubaneswar with the goal of assisting manufacturers in their digital transformation efforts.

Started in 2021, Datoms was conceived to support manufacturers during Covid-19 by improving services and warranty verification processes through data accessibility. Initially, the company focused on the power sector, targeting generators and compressors, and later expanded to solar, UPS, inverters, electric vehicles, and automotive. With deployments across different sites, Datoms provides real-time information for manufacturers to better understand their customers and products. Datoms offers software components for OEMs to build connected products, serving as a one-stop solution.

“The subscription cost for accessing Datoms’ services varies from 100 to 2000 rupees, depending on the type and volume of the machine. Monthly plans are available for customers with over 1000 or 10,000 machines, while annual plans are offered for others,” shares Amiya.

Datoms provides hardware for EVs to connect to its platform, enabling OEMs to offer smart, connected products. They manage battery health, services, etc, across all EVs and offer customisable software features for different customer segments. Datoms enable bulk firmware updates based on customer use and provide a connected leasing platform for businesses and individuals to start EV leasing services. “We aim to accelerate EV adoption by supporting OEMs and leasing companies. We are also planning to onboard charging stations and battery/power backup system OEMs within the next six months,” says Amiya.

Datoms supports micro-entrepreneurs and midsize companies lacking leasing technology, empowering more players to offer services in various cities and preventing monopolies by democratising this technology.

If the company already has hardware or a BMS, Datoms provides software solutions, as its platform is hardware-agnostic. This flexibility allows companies to broadcast data to Datoms’ platform and offer leasing solutions or sell bikes through the platform, says Amiya.

“For startups developing EVs without telematics hardware, Datoms can provide the necessary hardware. This approach eliminates the need for companies to invest in hardware and software development, enabling them to bring products to market faster and with more control over features,” adds Amiya.

The startup claims its products are 100% made in India, although some supply chains rely on China. “The product is designed, its PCB and core board are manufactured, and the final assembly is conducted in India. However, we depend on China for some components, along with Taiwan,” informs Amiya.

While discussing data security, Amiya shares that it involves different layers, including data in motion (transmitting data) and data at rest (stored data), which we secure using end-to-end encryption.

The startup aims to achieve a revenue of â‚ą500 million within the next two years. They target IoT sensor and gateway manufacturers and system integrators capable of deploying the solution on the customer side.
