To Drive Unified Charging Standards In India, Bharat Charge Alliance and CHAdeMO Join Hands

  • Bharat Charge Alliance (BCA) and CHAdeMO collaborate to establish seamless and unified charging experiences for all stakeholders in India’s electric mobility sector
  • BCA and its partnership with CHAdeMO will adopt IS/IEC standards

Bharat Charge Alliance (BCA) and CHAdeMO have joined forces to collaborate on creating seamless and unified charging experiences for all stakeholders. Kapil Shelke, Founder & CEO of Tork Motors and driving force behind the BCA initiative, mentioned that he had consistently held the belief in democratizing technology to enhance accessibility and cost-effectiveness for consumers.

He noted that the standardization of charging infrastructure would introduce an entirely new perspective for users of electric vehicles in the two- and three-wheeler categories. These segments constitute a significant portion of the market and are experiencing increased adoption. Kapil also emphasized that the essential factors of interoperability and the seamless utilization of each other’s charging networks would play a crucial role in alleviating concerns and doubts surrounding electric vehicles and their ecosystem among skeptics.

The Bharat Charge Alliance stands as an open platform uniting EV OEMs, charging station manufacturers, component producers, battery and energy providers, and charge point operators. Its overarching goal is to establish a secure and interoperable charging infrastructure throughout India, benefitting all alliance members and their customers. Its main goal is to make standards that fit all the OEMs in the industry. Also, it wants to add extra technology to the standards that already exist, like IS and IEC standards, apart from custom protocol.

BCA’s collaboration with CHAdeMO heralds a monumental step forward. By adopting IS17017-25 (from IEC 61851-25) EVSE standards and IS17017-2-6 (IEC 62196-6) vehicle inlet and connector standards, BCA aims to create an interconnected charging network that transcends geographical and technological boundaries. This marks a significant stride toward synchronizing the charging experience, whether in the B2C or B2B domain.

Tomomi Hakomori, Public Affairs Director at CHAdeMO Association, stated that their partnership with BCA emphasizes their dedication to improving India’s charging infrastructure. Together, they are shaping a promising future for e-mobility.

“CHAdeMO” serves as both the moniker for the DC charging technology and the organization responsible for its advancement. Through CHAdeMO, a standardized DC charging system has been established for diverse electric vehicle models, enabling smooth interaction between the vehicle and charger.

The CHAdeMO Association functions as a collaborative hub for e-mobility, centered around the CHAdeMO DC charging protocol. Operating as a network of companies providing CHAdeMO-related products and services, the Association unites efforts to foster and facilitate global electric mobility. Its membership includes leading automotive OEMs that span all seven continents.
