MediaTek launches R&D Center for excellence in Bengaluru

MediatekThursday, August 21, 2014: MediaTek Inc has announced a new Research & Development (R&D) facility at Bengaluru. Focus for the new R&D center will be to develop innovative solutions for wireless communications and establish MediaTek’s presence in other core segments like connectivity & home entertainment devices.

Reflecting the strong growth phase the organization is witnessing, MediaTek announced its robust expansion plans for the Indian market with an investment of US $200 million to be made during the course of the next few years.

With this new investment, MediaTek is set to boost its R&D capability in India to enhance its technology competitiveness and to enable the development of affordable solutions that meet the needs of the billions of consumers in the rising Super-mid market.

Sharing insights on MediaTek’s expansion plans for India, Grant Kuo, Managing Director, MediaTek India, said, “MediaTek Bangalore R&D center would cater to the growing needs of millions of consumers in emerging Super-mid market, especially in the South-East Asian region. MediaTek is one of the few companies that provide a whole spectrum of technologies, and with the launch of Bengaluru center, we are looking to expand into our other set of technology segments in India, besides mobile communications.”

Talking about the new R&D facility, Akshay Aggarwal, General Manager, MediaTek Bangalore, said “We are delighted to be a part of the growing technology ecosystem in Bengaluru. By year-end, we plan to build a workforce of over 100 professionals with strong expertise in the IC design industry, and over the next few years, we look to grow to over 500 in number. The Bengaluru center for excellence will develop exciting new products and applications, enabling India to harness growth opportunities in emerging technologies such as LTE.”

The already operational facility is spread across approximately 70000 sq ft and has been strategically established in the bustling Tech Park, along the Outer Ring Road in Bengaluru.

Primary focus for MediaTek in Indian market has been the mobile communications segment so far, and the chip provider caters to almost all leading Indian handset manufacturers. With an objective of enhancing global customer profile, including India, MediaTek is actively looking at diversifying its operations in the country by enhancing connectivity and home entertainment segments. The new center will work in collaboration with other globally located R&D facilities of MediaTek to design solutions that combine hardware, software and services to deliver a seamless cross-platform experience to consumers.

MediaTek currently has a R&D facility situated in NOIDA (NCR Region), and will continue to grow. This new commitment underscores MediaTek’s confidence in India’s R&D environment, business landscape and infrastructure as an area to grow its business.
