Magna Secures eDrive System Contract With North American OEM

Electrification initiative backs upscale niche vehicle platform; main rear system, a Magna 800V eDS Duo variant, combines 726 kW power and 8,000 Nm torque in a single package.

Magna is expanding its footprint in the electrification sector by securing a significant contract from an OEM based in North America. This contract involves supplying a bespoke primary rear eDrive system designed for a premium niche vehicle platform the company offers. This development underscores Magna’s dedication to meeting the automotive industry’s immediate and future needs as it undergoes a transformative shift towards electrification.

This system, which is a specialized version of Magna’s 800V eDS Duo, is distinguished by its remarkable power and performance capabilities, unmatched by most vehicles currently available. With an impressive output of 726 kW and 8,000 Nm of torque, the system uniquely combines dual e-motors, inverters, and gearboxes into one comprehensive package, setting a new standard in the industry.

Magna’s role extends beyond mere supply; it includes the intricate design of the gearbox and its housing, the development of an effective cooling system, and the seamless integration of e-motors and inverters. This holistic approach ensures the system’s reliability, operational efficiency, and sustained power delivery.

Diba Ilunga, President of Magna Powertrain, highlighted the firm’s dedication to supporting its customers as they transition to electric vehicles, focusing on achieving a sustainable, emissions-free future. Ilunga stated that the contract demonstrates Magna’s superior skills in designing and incorporating electric powertrain systems, showcasing robust collaboration with a respected customer to develop groundbreaking solutions.

The manufacturing of this advanced eDrive system is set to take place at Magna’s facility in Ramos, Mexico. The commencement of serial production is anticipated to occur in the coming years, marking a significant milestone in Magna’s contribution to the electrification of the automotive industry.
