Global Semiconductor Sales Surge

The Semiconductor Industry Association sheds light on the resilience and evolving nature of the dynamic trends of the market and underscores how the semiconductor industry is adapting and flourishing amidst changing landscapes.

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) revealed that global semiconductor sales achieved a significant milestone, reaching $124.5 billion in the second quarter of 2023. This figure showcases a notable uptick of 4.7% compared to the same year’s first quarter. There’s a contrasting scenario compared to the second quarter of 2022, with a decline of 17.3%. Notably, the global sales for June 2023 stood at $41.5 billion, exhibiting a rise of 1.7% when connecting with the previous month’s statistics. This data underlines the dynamic nature of the semiconductor market and the continual evolution of industry trends.

As the foremost advocate for the semiconductor sector, the SIA serves as the representative voice of an industry, one of the leading contributors to America’s exports. The semiconductor industry is pivotal in bolstering the nation’s economic robustness, advancing national security, and fostering global competitiveness. Under its representation, SIA encompasses a remarkable 99% of the U.S. semiconductor industry in terms of revenue, and significantly, it also encompasses nearly two-thirds of non-U.S. chip companies. This strategic coalition allows SIA to actively pursue reinforcing the semiconductor industry’s leadership across vital domains such as manufacturing, design, and research.

The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organisation compiles monthly sales data as a three-month moving average. The SIA, representing the U.S. semiconductor industry, encompasses 99% of its revenue and holds over approximately two-thirds of non-U.S. chip enterprises. Looking at regional trends, there were month-to-month sales hikes in the Americas (4.2%), China (3.2%), Japan (0.9%), and Europe (0.1%), albeit a marginal dip in the Asia Pacific/All Other (-0.5%). In a year-to-year comparison, sales experienced an upswing in Europe (7.6%), while they declined in Japan (-3.5%), the Americas (-17.9%), Asia Pacific/All Other (-20.4%), and China (-24.4%).

“Although global semiconductor sales in 2023 remain behind the totals from last year, revenue ticked up in June for the fourth consecutive month and notched solid quarter-over-quarter increases, providing optimism the market will continue to rebound over the second half of the year,” said John Neuffer, SIA president and CEO.
