According to a report by Reuters, Daimler said that it plans to build 50,000 Mercedes EQC electric cars this year. It denied a report in Manager Magazin which said that it was forced to pare back its 2020 production targets because of battery supply issues.
The report said that Manager Magazin said that Mercedes had reduced its production target to 30,000 from about 60,000. This was due to the shortage of battery cells from LG Chem. Manager Magazin added that Daimler wanted to sell around 25,000 EQC vehicles in 2019. It could only build about 7,000 of them due to same issues.
Production plans for 2020 not changed
As per Reuters, a Daimler spokesman Joerg Howe said that its production plans for 2020 have not been changed. It plans to produce around 50,000 Mercedes-Benz EQC models in 2020. The report said that Daimler’s works council chief Michael Brecht told Manager Magazin that one of the reasons the company is struggling to meet battery demands is due to the fact that Tesla bought Grohmann Engineering.
Grohmann Engineering is a battery automation specialist hired by Mercedes-Benz to build up its own battery manufacturing capacity. This led to problems for Daimler as it was in the middle of building up its production at its electric vehicle battery production unit Deutsche Accumotive.
