China’s TCL communication adopts broadcom® 3G android platform

Saturday, May 25, 2013: Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced that Chinese smartphone manufacturer TCL Communication has chosen the BCM28145, a Broadcom 3G HSPA+ platform for use in its new J310 Android-based smartphone. Targeted at the entry-level consumer, the device includes a dual core Cortex A9 processor and delivers superior performance at faster speeds, a key requirement for users seeking to take advantage of China Unicom’s expanding 3G network. The entry-level smartphone segment is driven by emerging markets where consumers are buying their first mobile phones and using them as personal computing devices. According to ABI Research, smartphones costing $250 or less before carrier subsidies will make up 46 percent of all global smartphone shipments by 2018, up from 28 percent in 2012.1 Broadcom’s complete platform approach integrates cellular baseband processors with connectivity solutions and advanced technologies for multimedia, power management and multiband-multimode RF. Prominent mobile brands including TCL have partnered with Broadcom to affordably and quickly develop new handsets with industry-leading features such as HSPA+ and 2G/3G dual-SIM dual-standby, an essential capability in emerging markets.

TCL’s J310 is powered by the BCM28145 chipset, which is optimized to support the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system (OS). It includes a 1.2GHz dual Cortex A9 processor with dual vector processing unit (VPU) multimedia engine, a globally proven 21.1/5.8 Mbps HSPA+ modem, and 3G/2G dual-SIM dual-standby capability.

Broadcom’s family of 3G and 4G LTE smartphone solutions deliver the features required for all tiers of smartphones, from affordable entry-level devices to high-performance superphones.
