In January 2024, production started for use in XPeng’s X9 MPV; stator winding technology provides exceptional power density and efficiency, while oil cooling enhances motor heat dissipation.

BorgWarner has initiated the production of eMotor rotors and stators for XPeng Motors, a renowned smart electric vehicle (EV) company based in China. These components are destined for use in the X9 MPV and XPeng’s forthcoming electric B-class sedan, with the commencement of production scheduled for the third quarter of 2024. According to BorgWarner, the high voltage hairpin (HVH) 220 eMotor is designed to offer superior power and torque density, along with enhanced efficiency at a competitive cost. Moreover, it is characterized by its exceptional durability.

Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, expressed his enthusiasm about providing their advanced stator and rotor to this leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM), thereby contributing to the progression of China’s electric vehicle industry. He emphasized that BorgWarner’s comprehensive product expertise will support XPeng in its efforts to innovate its electric drive designs.

The HVH220 eMotor is designed to operate within a voltage range of up to 800V and features a 220 mm outer diameter stator along with BorgWarner’s patented high voltage hairpin winding technology. It incorporates a permanent magnet rotor and proprietary stator insulation enhancement technologies, ensuring top-notch durability and reliability. The HVH220 eMotor is capable of delivering up to 300kW of power with a maximum operating speed of 18,000 rpm, and it boasts peak efficiencies exceeding 97 per cent.

To cater to the performance demands of more powerful motors, BorgWarner has developed oil-cooled solutions. In particular, the gearbox oil is utilized to cool the motor, improving heat transfer and the overall heat rejection capacity of the system. Direct rotor oil cooling further aids in dissipating heat from the electric motor core, enabling the achievement of higher torque and power density.
