TIDCO, nodal agency for defence corridor is planning to set up the center in TamilNadu. There are several electronics manufacturing and design focused industries and Tamil Nadu has a huge potential for communication and EMI/EMC testing labs.

The primary focus of these labs will be on electronic warfare and electro-optics and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, these infrastructures will also help in attracting both global and domestic investments from defence original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and aerospace. It is speculated that Indian defence forces would procure UAVs worth USD 3 Billion in the next 10 years from the domestic companies.

Apart from this, it is also expected to increase the growth of the domestic, civilian UAV market. It is expected for the electronic warfare systems market size in India to reach around Rs 600 Crore to Rs 700 crore by 2030. Similarly, the current market size of the testing industry is expected to reach Rs 200 crore to Rs 220 crore from Rs 130 crore by 2030, the sources added.

Though there are dedicated testing facilities for defence electronics (Electro-Optics), there are no such dedicated facilities for MSMEs and other industry players. The testing requirements for EMI and EMC defence applications are complex and specific, though these tests are performed across various industries. There are also specific limits on emission from the tested electronic devices set by various regulatory bodies.

These EMC regulations provide enhanced safety and reliability for anyone using the electronic and electrical equipment. These EMI/EMC tests ensure that the devices function properly and do not interfere with the operation of other equipment or fail to operate.
